The hidden dangers of synthetic fragrance

We all want beautiful smelling products.  But if you knew the hidden dangers of synthetic fragrance I'm sure you'd be less impressed.  We apply fragrance on our skin with every day products such as shower gel, face cream and body lotion and of course - perfume.  Synthetic fragrance is a combination of chemicals to create a desired smell.

Dangers of synthetic fragrance

So what's the big deal?  Does it matter whether we use natural or synthetic fragrance?  The hidden dangers of synthetic fragrance is that whilst they may smell amazing and last all day they can cause side effects such as skin irritation, headaches, dizziness, and rashes.  This is why so many baby products are created 'unscented'.

A 1986 report by the National Academy of Sciences noted that 95 percent of fragrances are derived from petroleum - crude oil and include benzene derivatives (carcinogenic), aldehydes, toluene, and many other known toxins linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions.  A 2001 study by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that synthetic fragrances were often shown to contain hormone disruptors linked to abnormal cell reproduction.

Synthetic fragrances are far cheaper to create than using real ingredients from essential oils.  They're also created to last a long time so don't break down easily so they can stick to our skin, clothing and hair.  These quickly build up to create a toxin filled environment.

One fragrance can use up to 200 ingredients. There are only 26 fragrance chemicals that are required to be labelled by EU Law and many companies hide their 'secret' ingredients behind the label 'perfume' or 'fragrance', so you really can't tell what you're putting on your skin.

We believe that the best fragrance will always come straight from nature.  That's why we only use essential oils to add beautiful scents to our products. Not only do they give superior fragrance, but deliver superior therapeutic and skin benefits as well.  That's why we love Supernatural Beauty.

Stay Supernatural xx
